This finding is consistent with established literature on disordered gambling and demonstrates the need for further research into the relationships between gambling behaviour and online poker play, using a quantitative correlational design amongst a larger sample of elite online professional poker players.

Despite the many challenges of being an online poker player, the majority of participants in this study described it as highly worthwhile. They were able to achieve reasonable financial expectations from the game and many described positive psychological benefits such as increased self-esteem and improved social relationships. The fact that the game is regulated and legal in many jurisdictions means that people from all over the world can participate. This has led to a boom in online poker and there are now more players than ever before.
